A long-read article for Vittles, the popular food newsletter edited by Jonathan Nunn. Charting the origin story of zongzi dumplings, which are eaten around the time of Duanwu or the Dragon Boat Festival, and how these delicious rice parcels encase a hidden lesson of sacrifice and collectivism.
Beauty of Batik - August 2021
From 28th August - 11th September, The Steam Room presented Beauty of Batik, a batik-themed pop-up honouring Malaysian Independence Day. I was pleased to curate Batik Stories, which were crowdsourced from all around the world and woven into a collection of tributes that can be read by clicking the image above.
Year Of The Ox - February 2021
From 11th – 26th February 2021, The Steam Room Dry Cleaners hosted Year Of The Ox - a collaborative celebration to ring in the Lunar New Year. The pop-up supports artists and artisan makers from the UK East and South East Asians community as well as Hackney Chinese Community Services. I curated the food offering as part of the collaboration.
London Feeds Itself - September 2022
I contributed a chapter on ‘The Community Centre’ to this Open City book. 25 essays about 25 different buildings, structures and public amenities in which London’s vernacular food culture can be found, seen through the eyes of writers, architects, journalists and politicians, edited by food writer and editor of Vittles, Jonathan Nunn.
