Welcome to the #AsianDessertExchange 🥮🧁🍰🍪🍧🍬🍭🍡

Asian Dessert Exchange started in 2020 during lockdown. It was a bonkers initiative intended to replace the regular potluck gatherings that I host. In its place arose the phoenix that was Asian Dessert Exchange, a monthly treat swap like Secret Santa with Asian desserts in the post!

The collective grew, as we stayed connected by spreading joy and sugar-based adrenaline through some very dark months of the pandemic. My vision was for everyone to celebrate our diverse heritages by making and sharing traditional Asian desserts, especially those that are hard to find in the UK or are dying artisan crafts. From Peranakan kuehs to Thai khanoms, Singaporean pineapple tarts to Cantonese wife cakes, laddu, halwa, love letters, bebinca, dasik, bánh bò nướng and mochi… the variety of desserts that landed on doorsteps and in letterboxes across the UK was truly amazing to see.

In total, we did seven exchanges until, gradually, life started to normalise again.

In February 2022 Asian Dessert Exchange 2.0 was birthed, with members of the collective pulling together for its first fundraising bake sale. Co-hosted with Mark of The Adobros and Lucky & Joy, together we raised £3,000 for survivors of Typhoon Odette in the Philippines.

Going forward, my vision for Asian Dessert Exchange is that it grows as a collective of Asian and Asian-adjacent bakers, professional or amateur, who pull together in solidarity to support urgent causes — especially those that do not get enough airtime due to the inherent mainstream media bias.
